Nightmare

During the daytime
you keep your heart hidden,
adjusting the mask that you wear,
Suppressing your thoughts,
you’re most potent emotions,
so nobody sees that they’re there.
And it almost works,
until the night comes,
and you’re fast asleep in your bed,
Tossing and turning,
trying to outrun
the monsters unleashed in your head.

Heart on the Line

I gave you my heart
with no hesitation,
accepted who you were
without need for explanation
i put myself into
a fairytale world
not caring about anything
except being your girl.
I gave all i could
and took what i got,
until i realized
more often than not
I was giving much more
than i would get back,
and was more than willing
to pick up any slack,
but now i am tired,
it’s just way too much,
i feel like we’re tumbling,
we’re falling out of touch.
i’ve tried to prevent it
but there’s only so much i can do
to keep us together;
i can’t do it without you.
So show me that you’re willing
to go out of your way
to make an honest effort
to convince me to stay.
I’ve put my heart on the line,
but not for you to take…
it’s your place to earn it,
or else it’s just gonna break.

Writer’s block

I seem to have a writer’s block;
I’m not sure what to say.
I try to hang onto my thoughts,
But they twirl and spin away.

Feelings flitting through my mind,
Changing channels fast.
I reach out to grab one, but
Before I can, it’s past.

I wish that I could picture
The thoughts up in my head
but there’s just that
“polar bear in a snowstorm”
instead.

Look me in the eye

Look me in the eye.
Can you hold your gaze?
Or do you see the difference
And quickly look away?
What scares you so much
About my imperfections?
You look kind of wary
Like it’s an infection.
But there’s nothing different
About the rest of me,
So why do you stare
Like I’m some kind of freak?
You might think it’s funny
But try walking in my shoes.
If everybody laughed at you
Would you still be amused?
I shake the jokes and stares off
As they come day after day,
But the echoes never leave me, and
The taunting always stays.
When I look into the mirror,
I see dazzling eyes of blue.
And if you’d look past my flaws
You just might see that too.

I have felt

Some people say that I have only dipped a timid foot
into the shallows of life’s swift, endless current,
and therefore no nothing of how to swim its deeps.
They can’t tell by the sight of me
That I have already faced my worst fear,
so close to drowning in those relentless waters.
I have felt.
I have felt the hot saltiness of tears
on their winding path down my cheeks.
The fizzing, bubbling energy that is joy
charging every particle in my body.
I have felt despondency when unable to clear obstinate hurdles,
and the weary aching of bones and body that accompanies hard-earned triumph.
I have felt the pounding of my heart against my ribs
when faced with the putrid, chilling breath of fear.
The tickling of butterflies when someone I admire is seen.
I have felt the hollow numbness echoing inside
with the loss of a loved one.
The fatigue of carrying guilts that have built up like heavy bricks
weighing me down.
All these things and more I have felt, tumbling helplessly along in the relentless rapids of life.
And, although I cannot yet swim in the pulling currents,
I have learned to wade in the calms, and to keep afloat at least…
All because I have felt.

I am amiable and brusque
I wonder why the sky isn’t green and the grass isn’t blue
I hear many shouted whispers
I see the bright side of a gloomy day
I want to travel the world without taking a step
I am amiable and brusque

I pretend to be a smooth sea even when a storm is raging
I feel elation, sadness, joy, and confusion
I touch solid breezes and liquid sunshine
I worry about everything that is nothing
I cry when kindness meets cruelty
I am amiable and brusque

I understand everything about nothing
I say a little that means a lot
I dream of seeing an extinct species
I try to have an open mind and a steadfast opinion
I hope right side up isn’t really upside down
I am amiable and brusque

Autumn

The afternoon of summer
Fades to dusky eve of fall,
Where no bird makes a noise,
Not one lone robin calls.
Raspberry-pumpkin colored leaves,
Come twirling to the ground,
Then are shoved into a lonely wind,
To spin around and around.
Early morning frosts,
Ice black roofs over our heads,
With a late sunrise to melt them,
Long after we are out of bed.
The yellow school bus rumbles,
Down the long forsaken street,
Its yellow cat’s eyes prowling
For grumbling kids to eat.
The sweet scents of the spring
And summer are now gone,
And as winter has yet to arrive,
The fall is coming on.

They say we’re too young, too stupid, to do this,
they tell us we’re wrong, that we don’t have a clue,
about what could happen, might happen, will happen,
but what they don’t know is we actually do.

We’ve thought it out, talked it out, every possibility,
the best and the worst ones; we’re both well aware,
that we’re taking a risk, and a huge one at that,
but the thing about real love is it just doesn’t care.

Go on, keep insulting, keep threatening, i don’t see
where all this will get us, except farther apart.
You say it’s your right, your business, well i think
that it’s up to me what i do with my heart.

So don’t try to stop us, you’ll fall hard, it won’t work,
We’re as stubborn and reckless as romeo, and juliet.
Sure we’re not perfect, we’re trying, it’s worth it,
don’t forget nothing’s been able to stop us yet.

And yes, you’re right, the future’s so unclear, so uncertain,
but you’re missing one fine detail, in your life long repertoire,
With hope, and trust, and faith in God, to keep us standing strong,

I’m so unsure of my footing, Lord,
with every step I tread.
I try so hard to see the path
that You have laid ahead,
but I’ve been looking with my eyes
instead of with my heart…
and when I try to take control,
everything just falls apart.
Alone I stumble, trip, and fall,
I’m blind to the plans You’ve made for me,
completely helpless without You, Lord,
for You’re the only one who sees
what is to come,
what hasn’t passed,
what happens first,
and what comes last.
So,Abba, please take my trembling hands…
I’m putting all my trust in You;
no matter how broken or winding my path
Your endless love will see me through.
